How would you feel about a 3500 word story written in rhymed qhatorzains in alezandrines mixed with pentameter and quatrameter?

Hermit: If you can make that work, go for it.

All: Just to clarify a point about me accepting Ellie's story: while I'm doing most of the shoutouts for this anthology, I'm not in it alone. There are three editors -- the others are Gere McClellan and TW Williams -- and I'm possibly the easiest of the three to please in some ways. To get in, though, a story has to get past all of us. We're not an easy sell!

About how many spots do you still have open for this Steve, if you don't mind my asking?

billwardwriter.com</font> (http://www.billwardwriter.com)

Swashbuckler

Bill: We have a ballpark figure for the number of words total, enough to make a fairly fat anthology. And we have a rough guess as to how many stories it will take to fill that out. But we're not targeting a specific number of slots; if some of the better subs are short, then more people get in. And if we have more mind-blowing stories than we targeted for, I think we're all the types to say, 'then make a bigger book' rather than, 'Gee, that's a great piece, too bad it doesn't fit.'

Short version: It depends on what we get and how much we like it.

Hi,

I was wondering how you felt about multiple submissions to your anthology?

I was looking at this line which made me rather sad:

'If you want to try something in a modern setting, that?s OK, too, although we prefer sword-slinging fantasy worlds.'

I have two settings in mind-one more traditional sword & sorcery and one...well, I've always fancied burning down the local baseball stadium, shall we say?

I'd love to submit to you, but I wondered if it was okay to have 2 offerings or if I should focus my efforts in your preferred direction. It's great to have a chance to ask a question of the editor!

Thanks,

Ennubi

The Infinity Swords anthology opens in a few days, and I've just completed the first draft of my submission. This tale took an odd journey to become.

Over the summer I attended a workshop where the instructor asked us to write the opening paragraphs to astory wheretwo disparate lands existed in conflict within one world. The instructor, Dr. Allen Weiss of York University in Toronto, encouraged me to finish it. And then this anthology came along!

I find this the plague of my writing. I procrastinated, twisted and turned without luck. You see I get a story idea in my head, and I'm blocked otherwise until THAT tale is on paper. It can take a week, a month or a year. Still I have high hopes for this tale, but then again I always do. Once born, I can't kill my own.

Anyone else submitting?

I am submitting a futuristic sword and sorcery ( more like sword and machine) story with the Infinity Sword concept that IM YET TO GO BEYOND 2000 WORDS!! AAAH!!

Real life has me blocked a little haha

Melkor,

I have the exact opposite problem. I wrote a Brom tale 'Azieran: Tower of Mihtula' for Infinity Swords that clocks in at 7700 words. It'll be a tough sale due to length, but it holds its own against the other Brom tales. Probably either a tie for my favorite writing of that character, or 2nd favorite. The great thing about these anthos is that they force you to write, and if the story gets rejected, with a quick rewrite it can go to other slush piles. I feel I got a great tale out of the prompting of this antho, so I'm already pleased regardless of what happens (as all submitting Infinity Sword writers should be that are happy with the tale they've written). Thanks Steve!

Jim: That shouldn't have happened, and I still haven't seen your sub. Try sending the story to this email account:

zithander at aol dot com

Word to the wise: Don't EVERYONE start sending stories there. It's an email account I pretty much only check when I KNOW something is headed there. I'll go there looking for Jim's story, but probably won't look at that account again for a month or so -- and your sub will go unnoticed. If you have bounce issues to the carnivah house excite address, PM me here and we'll make arrangements to get your sub.

Also, I hope to add a 'story log' page to the Carnivah House blog sometime soon. I'll use the format perfected by other editers in these parts: story initials by author's initials. So 'The Gray Mother' by Steve Goble would be rendered 'TGM by SG' on the list. That way people will know that we got their stuff.

Sorry for your bounces, Jim, but thanks for mentioning it here so we can fix it!

I might do a scientific breakdown of subs at some point, but right now the focus is on A) letting people know we got their stuff and B) reading the stuff!

I can say the bulk of the submissions I've read thus far have been sword-and-sorcery/heroic fantasy. But I've seen some modern-day tales, too, some sort-of science fiction and a few alternative history stories.

And I'm happy to say that, so far, we haven't seen a lot of repetitive themes -- everyone's imaginations seem to be spinning in different directions, which is what we wanted. This ought to be a very, very cool antho.

Jason: The best bet is to keep an eye on the Carnivah House blog, where we will make announcements about replies, etc., and update people about progress on the project. I can certainly PM you here when we send your reply.

All: Anyone who hasn't heard from us by March can send us a query.

Steve,

It's only been a week-and-a-half since the deadline, but how's the slush shaping up? Care to share how many submissions you've received and how many you've accepted? With only 8-10 slots, this'll be a tough one to get into.

Chris: I think we have had 70-80 submissions. None have been accepted yet from this round, as we haven't finished reading them all. We have three editors, each reading all the subs separately and keeping our opinions private until we've all read everything. Then we'll gather, compare notes and see which stories end up on all three of our 'keep' lists. I expect we'll also argue on behalf of stories we like but which do not make the cut for the other editors.

Anyway, we hope to have decisions rendered before February ends. I'm trying to avoid reading 10-12 stories a night because I think those I read toward the end of a marathon find me in a tired and grouchy mood. I want to give everyone the fairest shot I can, so I read one to three subs at a time, then go do something else.

Cool, thanks for the info. I was just curious as to how things were developing.

I'm just glad we have a leap day this year!
At our last check-in, I was leading the pack in reading, but I have miles to go before I sleep.
... and I'd like to give a public thanks to Steve for being the mouthpiece of this effort. That gives me more time for life, love and the pursuit of sappiness.
... and I'm not sure about personifying stories, intimating that they can 'find' Steve doing anything. If the stories were roaming around the room, checking on my mental state, I'd be tired and grouchy, too... or pee-pants terrified.
Some might say, in noticing Steve allude to tired and grouchy: 'So how's that different than your normal state?'
Some might, but not me.

TW: 'Tired and grouchy' differs from my normal state in that I'm not always tired ...
