View Full Version : 2008 Story Contest

Big typo on the story contest page (http://sfreader.com/story-contest.asp), that being that I'd listed the contest as opening November 1st.
The contest actually opens December 1st!
We (Pete and I) accept entries from December 1 - December 31.
Sorry for the confusion. I've updated the page.

Apparently there's still some confusion about the contest, as illustrated on this thread (http://goldenagestories.com/beta/bb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=5918).
I'm just finishing up the vast, 600 page tome that I stupidly chose to review. My review and my story are forthcoming.

I'll post over there to clear it up.
Also, I put a link to the list of books on Library thing so you don't have to wait for Pete (whi has been traveling a lot) to email it.

Dave, to be quite frank:
I didn't enter because of the review requirement. I barely have time to write. I don't have time to read and then review. The only books I could have turned in reviews on would have been those I'm publishing and that looks bad.
I'm guessing that there are a lot of people that aren't entering for the same reason. The review requirement.
I understand why you made it.
I thought it was a bad idea at the time and I still do.
Sorry to be so blunt.

On the other hand, I'm doing a review specifically for the contest. Look at it this way: Many contests charge a $15 fee to enter. The review I'm writing for Dave will (hopefully) take about an hour to write. So I'm making $15/hr to write this review.
Okay, so there's several leaps in logic required there, but at the very least, we're helping out SFReader by writing a review...

CW - this is not directed at you specifically, but at the population in general (check your PMs for my reply to you):
Heaven forbid you take 20 - 30 minutes to write a review to support a REVIEW site for a chance to enter a FREE contest that offers $525 in prizes. Everyone can find the time to do something they WANT to do. Can't carve out 30 minutes all at once? Do five minutes a day for a week. Stay up 5 minutes later. Get up 5 minutes earlier. Write it longhand during lunch and then type it in.
Anyone who is using the 'not enough time to write a review' excuse is lying to themselves. You want to do that, that's your prerogative. But don't lie to me. Simply tell me you don't feel like writing a review and thus will not be entering the contest.
As an alternative to review writing, you can PayPal me $10 to help support the site. If you're interested in that option, PM me and I'll get back with details.

Hey Dave...I've already had the two reviews I did for SF reader published here, so...
Just wrote an action/adventure sci-fi tale for your contest.
Took me a couple of hours over two nights at work.
I've plenty of other stuff to do, but figured what the hell, it's only 5000 words.
(And I always intended to write a story for the contest anyway, just forgot about it is all. Good thing you posted up this reminder.)http://forum.sfreader.com/emoticons/yeah.gif
I've sent you an email, asking a couple of questions.
Now you got four stories...which has upset the apple-cart, because when there was only three stories, everyone knew they were going to win something. http://forum.sfreader.com/emoticons/tongue.gif

I'm three pages into a sword and sorcery adventure. But this is where I usually get stuck. lol. So I hope I can finish it by Christmas and submit it. I've got 4 or 5 reviews in this year, I think. At any rate, thanks for the reminder.

Well just to make sure...I sent in two stories. A few days before the deadline.
Just out of curiosity...how many stories did you end up getting in total Dave?
Or rather how many authors submitted anything, might be a better guideline.
Cheers: Jaq.
