Full Dark, No Stars, by Stephen King

It's been long while since I've read a Stephen King book. I think the last one was one of his Dark Tower books, and I couldn't tell you when that was. I thought The Stand was fantastic and have read it 3 or 4 times, but not in a long while. It's one of my favorites, but then I have a weakness for post-apocalyptic stuff. I remember some of his short stories too, though I couldn't tell you any titles. I haven't deliberately decided to avoid his stuff, I just kind of.... stop noticing it I guess. Plus his books tend to be very long and require a hefty investment of time to finish. And I haven't been reading as much as I used to. ...

    Aaron’s Revenge, by Christina Weigand

Aaron’s Revenge is a decently written (a bit pedestrian) of the lost prince type. Aaron is taken from his cradle by the badgize [term from Gahan Wilson] and left with unwitting foster parents. At fifteen, he is tested for talent and “assignment”, probably as a squire to a knight. Instead he is kidnapped again, and hauled off to the badgize place to become an evil wizard and instrument of his evil uncle Brandan’s revenge. But a little rescue (more than once), and “love is all you need,” comes into play. The ending clearly shows the author’s moral and didactic purpose. It’s worth reading, but will not win any prizes. But, do the good guys really not know what’s gotten into Tomas? Can you say, “Sequel”? A little more polish and a sequel would not be unwelcome. ...

Desdaemona is the debut novel (here in the US) for Ben Macallan. It's an urban fantasy, and most of you know that I generally don't read urban fantasy. I just don't get caught up in it. I received this book as an eARC before it was published and read at least half of it then. I bought the book when it came out and finished it up just now. Out of the urban fantasies I've read, I'd say that this one has a few qualities that will make it stick out in the urban fantasy field. ...

First off, I have not seen "True Blood" so I read this without any possible coloration from having viewed that first.

As everyone probably already knows, this is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. The basic premise is that vampires have been legally recognized and so are now part of the world. Sookie, a waitress in the small town of Bon Temps, has been desperate to see one, so when one shows up in her town, she's instantly drawn to him, mostly out of curiosity. But when young women--all with jobs like Sookie's, and all who associate with vampires--begin turning up strangled to death, suspicions turn on this new vampire, who Sookie has now befriended. The rest of the book revolves around Sookie finding out more about the vampire world while attempting to figure out who is killing these young women, since she is obviously a potential target. ...

Scorpions Rebellion is a dark, very apocalyptic science fiction novel written by Mike Saxton. Set in the not too distant future, the world is brought to its knees in just one day when all of the Earth’s major cities are reduced to rubble. The survivors have only begun to suffer, for the genocidal Zodiac has more horrors in store for them. Bladeless helicopters, giant city destroying bulldozers, and armored soldiers called Seekers, whose mere presence renders most humans helpless by the unexplained waves of fear they create, are just the beginning. ...

The main theme of this anthology is to have stories written from the zombie point of view, what it’s like to actually be a zombie and how the zombies fit into society . . . or perhaps change society into something completely different. There’s a wide range of stories here, from the straight forward “I’m in the mindless zombie’s head as it attacks” story, to ones in which the zombies have taken over the world and reformed it in their own image. What was also interesting was the diverse way in which some of the authors explained where the zombies came from—a disease, rage, nanos, allergic reactions, etc. Overall a solid anthology with some tongue-in-cheek stories . . . and also some stories that pushed my disgusting button perhaps a little too hard. I’ve bolded the titles of the two stories I enjoyed the most, but which ones you like will probably depend a lot on your own taste. ...
