Scorpions Rebellion is a dark, very apocalyptic science fiction novel written by Mike Saxton. Set in the not too distant future, the world is brought to its knees in just one day when all of the Earth’s major cities are reduced to rubble. The survivors have only begun to suffer, for the genocidal Zodiac has more horrors in store for them. Bladeless helicopters, giant city destroying bulldozers, and armored soldiers called Seekers, whose mere presence renders most humans helpless by the unexplained waves of fear they create, are just the beginning. ...

Zombiesque Edited by: Stephen L. Antczak

The main theme of this anthology is to have stories written from the zombie point of view, what it’s like to actually be a zombie and how the zombies fit into society . . . or perhaps change society into something completely different. There’s a wide range of stories here, from the straight forward “I’m in the mindless zombie’s head as it attacks” story, to ones in which the zombies have taken over the world and reformed it in their own image. What was also interesting was the diverse way in which some of the authors explained where the zombies came from—a disease, rage, nanos, allergic reactions, etc. Overall a solid anthology with some tongue-in-cheek stories . . . and also some stories that pushed my disgusting button perhaps a little too hard. I’ve bolded the titles of the two stories I enjoyed the most, but which ones you like will probably depend a lot on your own taste. ...

    Jeremiah Season 1 (2002)
Starring Luke Perry, Malcomb-Jamal Warner, Peter Stebbings, Ingrid Kavelaars
    Various Directors
    Review by Dave Felts
    Rating (2/5):

I've known about Netflix delivering streaming movies for a while, but watching shows on the computer just isn't for me, though I suspect my children won't be bothered by it. Then I learned I could stream right through my Wii! I ordered the disk from Netflix (free), it showed up in 2 days, and a few minutes later I was browsing available View Now movies and shows. I'm not an early adoptor by any means, but that was pretty cool. And convenient. Most of the stuff available for immediate streaming is older or less well known, but I rarely catch stuff when it's new, so there was plenty I was interested in. ...

    The Road (2009)
Starring Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron
    Directed by John Hillcoat
    Review by Dave Felts
    Rating (3.5/5):

While I'm on the topic of apocalyptic movies (see my Book of Eli movie review), I figured I'd offer up one of The Road. The Road, and award winning book by Cormac MacCarthy, was delivered as a movie with Viggo Mortensen starring as the title character, The Man. The only other character of note is The Boy, played by Kodi McPhee. Charlize Theron and Robert Duvall also make appearances, but not in any sort of impactful way; Theron as the wife in flashback scenes (in a much expanded--yet still superfluous--role in the movie) and Duvall as an old man they run into during their travels. ...

    The Book of Eli (2010)
Starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals
Directed by Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes
    Review by Dave Felts
    Rating (2.5/5):

I like end-of-the-world books and movies, probably because when you get right down to it I'm not a big fan of people. They get in my way, they tailgate me even when I'm already speeding, they sneeze on me in movie theaters, they're rude to me on the phone.... So it's fun every now and then to kick back and indulge in the fantasy that most of the people are gone and you're on your own, free to scavenge a life off the corpse of the old world. ...

    ET... call home?

Wyman Ford, a former CIA agent turned freelance investigator, first introduced to Preston's fans in TYRANNOSAUR CANYON and BLASPHEMY, returns to complete a solo undercover mission to locate a secret Cambodian mine hidden deep in the north Vietnamese jungles. The mine is turning out some very unusual gemstones that happen to be highly radioactive. But, as you might expect with any thriller penned by the likes of Douglas Preston, nothing is quite as straightforward as it seems at first glance. It isn't long before Ford finds his path crosses with a young girl who's attempting to locate the impact site of a small asteroid that recently lit up the night skies of Maine as it screamed into the earth's atmosphere. ...
