Thread: The Dresden Files

    Default The Dresden Files

I think I might have a new weekly show to watch on the Sci-Fi channel. Just watched the premier tonight, and I really liked it. The setting is different; a modern-day world where magic, while not commonplace, is not only real, but accepted as a normal skill (the main character is listed under 'Wizard' in the phone book). It's dark, without being overbearingly so, with some humor thrown in, and the main character seems likeable. Of course, you can't judge a series by one show, but this one definitely gave me enough to continue watching next week.

Just realized this is based on Jim Butcher's books.

Just watched it. It has kind-of a 'Buffy' feel to it. Anyone else pick up on that? Felt like first season Buffy to me. Pretty good, I thought. Not fantastic, but not bad.

I've been planning on picking the books up sometime. I don't have cable so you'll have to keep this thread active so I can monitor events.

They're doing/did a marathon for the end of season run so I watched it.

Really liked it. I did pick up a slight Buffy feel but I think that is simply "genre feel" more than rip off--despite a reoccuring femme fatale vampire ala' Angel, and a "coucil" of wizards ala' the watchers, anda friend who's a hard nosed female cop ala' Angel the show.

It also reminded of Laura K Hammilton's early stuff before they become paranormal porn wrapped up as supernatural detective fiction and were in fact just supernatural detective fiction.

The cast clicks together and I think because of that this might work for awhile.
Good solid mysteries, some on the order/level of X-Files horror whodunits.

Mostly good stuff all around IMO.

Tarantino himself has been forward and unapologetic about his influences. In a 1994 interview with Empire magazine, he said, "I steal from every single movie ever made. If people don't like that, then tough tills, don't go and see it, all right? I steal from everything. Great artists steal, they don't do homages."

I enjoyed watching the show. However it is NOT like the books and must be taken as an entirely separate and limited entity.

The books are much more detailed and therefore a better story.

To see him mouthing off to the White Council enforcer on the series is a bit jarring.

Likewise to see him and Bianca working together is very different. The casting on Bianca btw, was perfect for me.

The series is fun. It's a bit light. I hope to see more of it next year!

I love the books. I see that Jim Butcher is going to be interviewed at The Blood Bank tomorrow.
I just got my hands on "Changes", and it's pretty good so far.
