Thanks, Crystalwizard,
For posting the link. The Flash Gordon TV series premieres on the SCI-FI channel in Aug. It's good to have the original out there for those who want to see it. From what I've read of the new series, they've taken quite a few liberties with the storyline and characters to make it more up to date. That worries me. It also appears to be something of a rush job getting it to the screen.
I wrote a review of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe for Filmfax magazine. Unfortunately I don't think it is online anywhere. It was the June/July issue, 2001. No. 85. The point of my review was how relevant the serial is today. By that I mean we now live in a time of polarization. Political party against party, nation against nation, religion vs. religion, etc. Its a situation much like conditions on Mongo when Flash, Dale and Zarkov arrive. All the different races on Mongo: Hawkmen, Sharkmen, LionMen, Clay People, Rock People, all this multi-ethnic cultural diversity. All divided and conquered by ruthless dictator Ming. But Flash arrives, and with his sense of honor and fair play, he makes friends with them and unites the races of Mongo to defeat the IMperial Majesty Ming The Merciless. It's a great tale.

Too bad they only have this, the second serial. I have multiple copies in my collection. What I need is the original serial and the third serial 'Flash Gordon concours the Martians'. They have 'Santa Claus concours the Martians' but thats an entirely different sort of thing!

Mike,
The actual order of the serials was: Flash Gordon 1936, Space Soldiers Trip to Mars (1938) and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940). I've got the first on laser disc, the second on VHS and the third on DVD. Image Entertainment put these out on DVD a while back. You might check their web site to see if they're still available. Image also released the feature film versions of all three serials, but they suffer from so much editing. Four hours down to 90 minutes. DVD Planet might have them in stock, if still available. I've got a hunch when the TV series airs, all this stuff will be back in circulation.

I'm a bit excited about the TV series, but now I'm worried since you say it is a rush job. I hope it doesn't end up being one of those things aimed at teenagers, but not very well.

Part dark, part light. And gooey in the middle.
David,
I'm not naturally an optimist. I see the TV series as something of a letdown already, since there were plans earlier to do a major feature film directed by Steven Sommers. That could have been something. Another bland TV series doesn't turn me on all that much. But I will watch and DVR the shows. I'm more excited about the possibility of Flash Gordon merchandise. I'd like to get my hands on a good looking raygun!
