I'm a big fan of the old Weird Tales crowd--Lovecraft, Smith, Howard, Bloch and Bradbury. To me Poe is still unsurpassed at the short horror story.
Past the dead white guys from another time I like the one Skipp Book I read but it wasn't a Spector but a Skipp and Levinthal, and it had its moments.
I like King, he seldom disappoints and is one of the very few writers to ever scare the hell out of me. Also his son Joe Hill, I really enjoyed Heart Shaped Box. I read a lot of vampire fiction, werewolf fiction etc but most of it isn't horror. Nancy Collins is the exception, I loved Sonja Blue and it was horrifying.
In the paranormal monster adventure and romance category, which I like for itself by the way, I think Carrie Vaughn is the most fun I've had of that type.
Many of the authors mentioned I've never read, so many books, so little time and I read heavily in so many categories.

This semester I'm teaching a Topics in Literature course titled "The Horrid Thing: Fear in American Fiction and Film." I begin with Hawthorne and Poe, cover Lovecraft extensively and work up to recent authors including Max Brooks (World War Z) and Cormac McCarthy (The Road).

It's been a while since I've visited this thread: did anyone mention Thomas Ligotti?

I've recently been introduced to William Nolan's work, and this guy is amazing. Pretty comparable to Bradbury and Matheson, which is saying a LOT.

Aurelio Rico Lopez III aka "Thirdy" has had fictionfeatured in COLD FLESH (Hellbound Books), THE BLACKEST DEATHI, II, and III (Black Death Books), SPORTY SPEC: GAMES OF THE FANTASTIC (Raven Electrick Ink), STAR-SPANGLED ZOMBIE (Maniac Press), RAW MEAT (Sideshow Press), SHADOW BOX (Brimstone Press), TRIP THE LIGHT HORRIFIC (RAGE machine Books), DEAD MEN (AND WOMEN) WALKING (Bards and Sages), and THE BOOK OF SHADOWS VOL. I (Brimstone Press). His poems have appeared in Mythic Delirium, Star*Line, Dark Animus, Goblin Fruit, Scifaikuest, Electric Velocipede, Sybil's Garage, The Horror Express, Down In the Cellar, and elsewhere.

Lovecraft. Richard Matheson. Robert W. Chambers (wrote The King in Yellow, an important influence on Lovecraft). William Hope Hodgson (another very important influence on Lovecraft). Arthur Machen. Clark Ashton Smith. Algernon Blackwood. M. R. James. Mary Wilkins.

A collection of online horror stories by some of the aforementioned, among other writers.
I'm particularly fond of 'The Night Wire.'

Excellent list of authors you give, Meriall, but that link isn't working.

Hodgson's House on the Borderland is a minor masterpiece of weird fiction.

And some of his sea stories are very, very creepy.

Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, and (currently) Brian Keene.

A recent up-and-comer, Myrrym Davies, does some good stuff, too.
