Thread: Deer Hunt

    Default Deer Hunt

Y?skelkal wrinkled his nose, sniffed the air and concentrated on the faint scents floating on the breath of wind. Food, he thought after a moment. That way. He opened his eyes and moved across the rocky ground without a sound.

Thick stands of trees lined both sides of the valley and Y?skelkal trotted toward the nearest one and slunk deep within the shade. After several minutes his pace slowed to a crawl and he crept up to a small pond. A huge buck stood motionless nearby while several smaller deer grazed nearby under his watchful protection. Y?skelkal studied the deer and tried to figure how much meat each one would provide. As he made his final calculation and decided on a target, the buck turned his head, looked directly at him and sounded a loud warning. The deer scattered and fled into the forest in all directions.

Y?skelkal leapt out of hiding, shoved the buck out of the way and sprinted after the doe he'd chosen. He gained rapidly and caught her within a few seconds, grabbed her by the tail, yanked her from the ground and swung her around. Her head slammed into the trunk of a tree and exploded. Bits of brain splattered the underbrush and crimson blood gushed out of the end of her neck. Y?skelkal held the carcass upside down by the tail and let it bleed, then slung it over his shoulder and strode out of the woods.

Why the doe? The usual ROT for hunting is leave the females and young alone and take the males. After all you don't need as many males to keep the species going.

Also is this a quote from one of your books or just a random blurb?

Y'skelkal isn't human and the doe was the best target.

Yes, it's from one of my books

If he had to push to buck out of the way, why not just take the buck?

Sorry, stupid question I know but it's bugging me.

The doe's gonna be more tender to eat in his mind, at least.

You might want to insert a comment to that effect.

Y?skelkal studied the deer and tried to figure how much meat each one would provide. He automatically ignored the buck, knowing that the meat would be tough and stringy.

naw. By the point that this takes place in the story, the reader is familiar enough with Y'skelkal not to even wonder.

    Good enough.

Apart from that little nit I liked it, in case I didn't mention it earlier. A little graphic for my taste but it probably fits the storyline.
