Thread: Hi From the Isle of Man

  1. #1

Default Hi From the Isle of Man

Great site so thought I would take the plunge and join up. Looks like loads of fun, and I look forward to meeting up with you all in due course.

A bit about me, I signed a publishing contract a few months back for my Black Dragon series - humorous heroic fantasy - and the first book came out on 1st October, entitled Reluctant Heroes. The second book in the series, Cronan the Librarian, is due out 8th March 2008. Like all us scribblers, I would like to give up the day job and write full time, but them bills have to be paid, so day job it is, with scribbling in what free time I can muster. RH has received some great reviews, so you never know!

All the best to you all,

    Wez

    G'day Manxman!

I made some friends on your local Manx forum when I thought I was going to be riding to the TT for the big celebration this year.
But then I got caught up riding in South Africa (and then I rode over a cliff in the mountains down south and injured myself slightly. So I never got to RSA or Manx.)
Your books sound great mate, congrats. Who's the UK publisher of distributor?

Hey; you got a mobike or what?

Indirectly from you. (grin) I am on the fantasy list you just joined and went to flashing swords, then your books, then here, in a roundabout way. So you have only yourself to blame.

Hi Jaq, yep, I do have a bike. A Triumph Speed Triple. Just had a race can fitted and the bike remapped. Added another 8bhp, or so I believe. The bike certainly feels as though it has, anyway. Over a ton and your head feels like it is being ripped off though. The only problem with the naked sports, but I would not swop it. What is it you ride? Er, over a cliff? LOL

The UK publisher is Frontlist Books, an imprint of Softeditions. It is a small press indie publisher, and have been fantastic from day 1. Had a few nibbles from the bigger boys but in the end, as I was not Terry Prtachet, Tom Holt or Robert Rankin, they decliend. The same with agents. Becaase I write humour, not comedy, apparently it does not sell. Shame they never asked the reading public, because they seem to have a diferent opinion - thank goodness!

    Many thanks for the welcome.

I think I am the only fantasy author, but there are others. The guy who wrote Day of the Triffids was Manx, Kneale, I think his name was. And the author of the flashman books still lives over here. Linda Mann is another Manx author, and one of the stalwarts of Mills and Boon, whose name escapes me, also lives over here. And, Jon Rhys-Wiliams, or Gimli from Lord of the Rings lives over here.

So we have a few artistic types. I hope to become included in that select group at some point!

    Many thanks for the welcome.
