    Default Board Rules

    Conduct
There have been a few incidents lately where discussions moved past spirited conversation and descended into insults and vulgarity. Some things to keep in mind before you hit that Submit button:

SFReader isn't a democracy, it's a dictatorship, and I'm the dictator. Benevolent (mostly) but not adverse to loping off a few heads if that's what's required to keep my kingdom in order.

SFReader is a party, MY party (with help from several other hosts), and you're invited. Your older kids (12 or so and above) are welcome to attend as well. As you engage in discussions, refrain from doing anything that might result in you being asked to leave; party we are, frat party we are not.

Getting too loud, drinking too much, ripping off your clothes and table dancing, screaming profanity, insulting or assaulting other guests.... these are all the sorts of things that will get you attention you don't want. Non PG-13 rated behavior will probably draw down some ire upon you as well.

Generally, I'll ask first, but if you've really spun out of control, you'll find yourself outside and the door locked. Abject and profuse apology will probably get you back in.... the first time.

Above all keep it friendly, because if you don't, I won't either.....

    Posting
If you think you have a really good reason for soing duplicate posts, go ahead and do it. If I don;t think the dupes are appropriate, I'll delete them. If I delete then, don't repost them. That will irritate me.

Don't post spam. I have 100% intolerance for spam and will immediately delete the post and ban the user account.

I'm just glad I've never been involved with anything like that.

Tarantino himself has been forward and unapologetic about his influences. In a 1994 interview with Empire magazine, he said, "I steal from every single movie ever made. If people don't like that, then tough tills, don't go and see it, all right? I steal from everything. Great artists steal, they don't do homages."

I am not always a very tactful person. I apologise for my occasional blunt manner and confrontational tone. From this point forward, I will use much more restraint in what I post on SFReader.

Insults are vulgarity? As one of the more... um... opinionated members of the board, I expected that this was in part directed at me, but I don't remember any vulgarity or name-calling.

EDIT: I just remembered the spats that a lot of writers (myself included) had with one individual. Now that that individual is gone, I don't think you'll get any more nastiness.

Duly noted, although I must have missed something, since, apart from the incidents Jordan refers to, I have found this to be one of the most respectful and friendly boards around. Hope this admonition helps keep it that way.

Hum, glad I missed any nastiness. I enjoy a good debate but personal attacks and insults always just strike me as childish.

I appreciate your attitude, Dave. That kind of behavior can ruin a good board.

We had a spammer. I removed him. It's the same spam service we had to deal with the other day. Their members log onto forums, find threads, post a couple of lines that go with the topic in that thread and then a link to whatever they're spamming about.

Then they enter the information about the forum into the spam database. It goes out without 48 hours and checks to see if the posts were made. If it finds them, it pays them. I delete all their posts on a regular basis, as rapidly as I find them. We're getting far less now because our forums are not a healthy place for these guys to come if they want a paycheck.

We did an IP ban - are they coming from another IP now?

They don't work like that with that service. I went to that site the first time someone posted here and created an account. Researched them some.

They are a large service with a lot of employees. Employees log into their accounts there and search for advertising requests. When they find one, they look at a different list to find where those ads should be posted. Those ads will be links to the advertisers sites.

Then those people, who are not robots, go to the requested places to post, create accounts, look through the various forums, find forums to post in, read the threads in those forums, respond to those threads with a short few lines that fit the topic and include a link to the advertiser that they are spamming for.

so when we ban by IP we only ban the employee's personal IP that's doing the posting. But that doesn't stop other employees from coming here and posting spam.

The only way we're going to get them to stop is to take their posts down as fast as they go up. They don't get paid if those posts aren't up and if those posts aren't up, every time the link checkers go looking for them, we go further and further down the list of sites to post on.

Just want to say... Many thanks to both of you, Dave & CW, for working so hard to keep the Site clear of spammers & their dross. I recall see all these weird posts & assumed we'd got zapped. Next time I logged on - they were gone. As a VERY regular user of this Site I just want to express my appreciation for your efforts on my - and everyone else's - behalf...
