    Default Flash Gordon

The Scifi Chanel's"Flash Gordon" has just arrived on UK screens.

My God, it's bad. It's like all the worst elements of 70s, 80s and 90sSF TV, without any of the redeeming features. The guy playing Ming exhibits all the gravitas and majesty of acourgette. The effects make the old "War Of The Worlds" series look sophisticated. The acting makes "Buck Rogers In The 25th Century" seem like the Royal Shakespeare Company. It's so bad in all areas that it isn't even"bad enough to be good".

When you see things like Crusade and Firefly getting cancelled halfway through a season, and then you see this... it is to weep.

I caught about ten minutes of this when it first came out (in the US). Even though the ads looked abysmal, I wasn't prepared for just how bad it was. Fortunately, I had some steel wool close at hand, and after a quick scrub of the eyeballs I was able to see again.

I think shows like this are valuable though, as they allow reviewers to test their skills at hyperbole and scathing sarcasm, and get a bit of nastiness out of their system.

When it started it was horrid. Bad could not even start to describe what a putrid pile of biommatter this show was.

Then, imo, a surprise happened. It started getting better. Not great. Not Good. But better. About halfway through the season, when the focus switched tio Mogol, it did improve. The stories had a arching plot, the actors seemed to find the core of their characters, and Ming started to have villain qualties.

I still cannot recommend the series to anyone who wants good sci-fi/fantasy. If you want something adaquate, then you might want to try out the second half of the series.
