I wouldn't either - for personal viewing. but for the website, I have to be scrupulous - or at least hedge my bets.

the Fireball XL5 links to youtube are a case in point.

I was pretty sure that XL5 was still under some kind of rights restriction since most if not all of the Jerry Anderson properties are.

However, YouTube makes you (the uploader) state that anything you post is free of rights encumberances. Therefore, if I find it on youtube, it must be legal to link to - right?

This accomplishes two things at once: either the product is legal and I help spread the word through the website - or it really isn't, in which case I've helped bring it to the attention of those who might be getting violated.

So, while there is a lot of content that I know I can find (the movie Silent Running) for example - I can't link to it because I do have prior knowledge that it isn't in the public domain and no one, like a youtube, that can act as a 'shield' has made it available yet.
