Thread: My Inspiration of the Day

1. #1

Default My Inspiration of the Day

I was hunting down a video I had heard about this morning. At first I wasn't sure I liked the song, but after listening to it all the way through it kind of caught. Then I had an epiphany about a story I hadn't touched in months because I was dissatisfied with the beginning.
'Oh! This is how I need that story to start!'
I love it when that happens.

That song ate its way so far into my brain I had to pick up the cd in town. Now I can drive everyone in the house completely berserk.
I have the feeling the next story I write is going to be heavy on the testosterone.

Ok. My inspiration for today.

I get more story ideas from songs than probably any other single ... thing? Not so much plot ideas, but emotional, thematic ideas. Everything from Metallica to Beethoven to Counting Crows to Johnny Cash and far, far beyond.

"Beneath a Persian Sun" upcoming in Carnivah House's "Infinity Swords" anthology
"Peter Piker the Pankin Man" upcoming at Big Pulp

"Deep in the Land of the Ice and Snow" in"The Return of theSword"anthology

Same here. I get some pretty powerful imagery from a good song.

Today's inspiration. Arguably one of the best ballads ever.

Darkbow and TA, I know exactly what you mean: not plot ideas, but atmosphere. You hear a song and think, "I want this story to make the reader feel like that."

It's a cool and dreary day here. Perfect for getting some writing done. All I need is the right music.

Know what you mean about music... My last novel got written after I'd heard Regina Specter's 'Sampson'. It's a sort of love story cum military sci-fi coming of age about this girl who thinks she's found her perfect love after seeing this dropdead gorgeous guy. Only to find that their relationship causes her a lot of problems. And the story has now morphed into a trilogy.

I need to take more care what I listen to, I reckon.

I find myself disgruntled with life and humanity. It's time for a perspective adjustment.
The weather is still nice. The kids have a long weekend. Road trip!
Time to go home. No computer, no phone, just three days of fun.

Unfortunately I will have to come back, but at least I have the appropriate music for the return trip to WY.

I'm getting a lot of mileage lately out of Creed's 'Human Clay'. and various eclectic others (from Dan Fogleburg to Tori Amos to Elton John to Metallica and Whitesnake . . .)

Just bought Duffy's cd - from Ireland? I think. She has this black singer/soul voice that hearkens back to the 60s motown women. Fun single that was picked up by a commercial (can't remember which product, Apple maybe?) is 'Mercy.' I don't know if it gives me writing inspiration, but it does get my feet tapping. I like that song. So if you're talking country, another thought-provoking ballad is by Jamey Johnson - You Should Have Seen It In Color: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXKBUK94cC0

Beautiful song, Lyn.

Today is kind of dreary, so it calls for a slightly more upbeat kind of nostalgia. There are times when you need to mourn what is past, and times when you need to celebrate it.

That video has it wrong though, with the girls on the sidelines. When I grew up we were every bit as rough and tumble as the boys, and even the boys thought twice before following me when I had one of my 'wild ideas'.
A friend told me the most frightening thing I ever said was, 'Come on, I know a short cut.'

But I like to think I have outgrown such recklessness . . . most of the time.
