Actually what they do is sell books to get food. I base that observation on common sense... and what I've seen traveling in the countries you mention.erasmus said...
None the less, rich oppressed cultures do use technology against tyranny, certainly. But the foodless hand down books.
Downtown Habana, for instance, has a big informal swap meet on a public commons where you can pick up books, art, antiques, etc. for a song. And thus participate in the garage sale, scraping the last goods out of the crannies...to buy food.
Books are a luxury. Yeah, I know.... they're necessary and soul and all that. But that's said by people who don't have to choose between luxuries and eating.
Books are a luxury item. Like 'cheap gasoline' they have sort of APPEARED not to be for a while, but that's a bubble that won't last forever.
And yeah, I know.... I LOVE THEM. The feel, the smell, curling up in a smoky beach sofa, etc. But know what, there are people who feel the same way about Cadillacs.
In point of fact, information won't always be conveyed by stacks of paper. The future could hold things like radio podcast channels, screens in restrooms, direct neural jacks... who knows? This is a sci fi forum, for crisakes
