They say its 185 to build. Fine. Now some people may say that if you don't like the cost, well, don't buy it.
BUT my point is that there ARE in fact (at LEAST) double the amount of people (of those who have already bought the device) who would LIKE to buy it if only it were cheaper--or granted, using this business model ---they'd buy one if there were a poor man's model that holds fewer books.
One thing they could do is install a smaller gig or computer or whatever it is that stores the books---- because even the most voracious reader re-reads a favorite book maybe 4 times over time. And even then, the re-read books are a small portion of ALL the books they buy over time.
Books, for all their glories, are vastly disposable and basically a one-use /one time item. Only the iPOd (one of which I have) at $149, can have a larger re-use factor because music, unlike books, can be enjoyed a thousand times.
Now this new Kindle"2" sports a capacity to hold over a thousand books. Maybe if they at least build a smaller capacity model that holds less books that would be sold for less so the rest of the potential customers they are not selling to (which in theory is a loss on the bottom line) can have a shot at enjoying it as well?
And granted, the Kindle can be used to buy magazines and newspapers also, but even those are still, a one-time one use item. Highly disposable.
Some of the most basic mass entertainment still remains available only to the fewest people who can afford it.
Then, over time, it trickles down to the rest of us.

Working on a few novels while looking for work to keep a roof over my head
Aside from that I'm still just another writer looking to be read and loved
