    Default Issue 13 News!

    Hi everybody,
This is of course, an update on that dreadfully late issue 13 of Flashing Swords Magazine! The 50ft Ant has stepped away from his desk for a while, so I have been given the wonderfully challenging opportunity to get things rolling again as Editor. I?ll be completely honest here and admit that things are still in a state of flux for Flashing Swords but I am just as determined as he is to see the Magazine move forward.

Here is what I?m doing at the moment:

Creating a master list of those stories that were paid for in advance ~
like the 50foot Ant, I consider it only fair that those stories see publication, if you the authors are still willing. Please post what stories you were paid for, that were not printed in issue # 12 (especially those of you who haven't had communication in the last 60 days), here in the thread so I can hunt them down and make sure they are getting the attention they deserve.

Figuring out where accepted stories are in the editing process ~
if you have received a story with editorial suggestions, please give me a shout in this thread. Let me know if you had already re-subbed it or if those edits are still in progress and I?ll make sure that it is looked at as soon as you send it back.

Streamlining the confirmation process as well as the editing/ rewriting loop ~
this is going to take a lot of patience on everybody?s part but I am more than confident it can be done! I know how hard it is to send something out and end up worrying if it even got to the right place. I want to make sure that this endeavour is a positive experience for everyone involved and that means I need regular communication from all parties.

Whistling in the Darkzone seems to be fully operational so you are more than welcome to post replies over there as well, since this is basically cross posted from there =)

At this point I am not sure when issue 13 will be ready but with your input we can turn this around and make it a success. That success will of course lead to others as we establish a functional rhythm for this publication. Flashing Swords will, with a concerted effort between writers, artists and staff survive through this period of trials and tribulations. I am, as I've only been on the job a little over 48 hours, still gathering the team together and making sure we are all on the same page.

Sword and Sorcery publications of all types have a distinguished history and they can reach people on a level that full length novels sometimes can?t. They are good launching points for fresh talent and ideas. They allow authors to explore character concepts and plot arcs without the commitment of a full length novel. That is, in my opinion, part of what makes writing short fiction fun and a solid stepping stone to a full time literary career, if that is what is desired.

I sincerely hope that each of you will continue to place your trust in our efforts on your behalf.
    Honourably yours,
    Neve

    Neve,

PM me and I'll send you my email address. I've still got copies of every story that had been paid for when I turned FS over to Janrae and I'd like to make sure you have all the content in hand.

Thanks hamstersbane, you were already on the M-L for round up as a priority. Had you any feed back on the piece or done any rewrites? This will help me figure out where to put you in the queue =)

He'd done a revision before I accepted the story. Line edits and revisions before publication hadn't been done on anything past the august 2008 issue which was the last one I published.

Here is a quick little update just to keep folks over here in the loop

I am slowly but surely comparing as well as organizing a lot of data. CrystalWizard has been kind enough to share original files from before the sale of Flashing Swords and I am also slowly working my way through the submissions folder. It is really time consuming and I am putting in some very long hours. It doesn?t help that I?m trying to move flat at the same time but needs must

I also mentioned that I?m considering themes for issues from this point forward. Issue 13 is running under the tentative title ?Rites and Revelations? while 14 really seems to want to be called ?Double Dealing?. If you have anything lurking around the filing cabinet or computer that deals with rites of passage, stunning or disturbing revelations as well as double crosses and high stake gambles, please feel free to polish it up in preparation for a call which should go out in the next couple weeks.

I?m qualifying this with ?should? just because of the fact that I?m moving as well as still getting a handle on things. Moving means having to put up with intermittent net access as well as packing, unpacking and just the general drudgery that goes with the process. I will have a wireless connection that will enable me to at least keep on top of e-mail and I?ll be downloading at bunch of submissions to sort through for the times when I just can?t be bothered organizing or putting away anything physically. So, I might be a bit slow but I won?t vanish!

    Have a great weekend folks!

Crystalwizard rather flooded Neve's inbox and expects her to finally dig out of the snowdrift sometime around Nov. 2009

As per your request I am posting that my story, "The Homecoming of Brother Antonitus" had been accepted for publication and the contract signed, etc. My initial query received a response that they were unable to locate the tale, but were still looking through a lot of data. Follow up queries went unanswered. I appreciate you taking the time to post on the board and hope you continue to communicate your progress.

Best of luck on getting FS on track.
