Hi everybody,
This is of course, an update on that dreadfully late issue 13 of Flashing Swords Magazine! The 50ft Ant has stepped away from his desk for a while, so I have been given the wonderfully challenging opportunity to get things rolling again as Editor. I?ll be completely honest here and admit that things are still in a state of flux for Flashing Swords but I am just as determined as he is to see the Magazine move forward.
Here is what I?m doing at the moment:
Creating a master list of those stories that were paid for in advance ~
like the 50foot Ant, I consider it only fair that those stories see publication, if you the authors are still willing. Please post what stories you were paid for, that were not printed in issue # 12 (especially those of you who haven't had communication in the last 60 days), here in the thread so I can hunt them down and make sure they are getting the attention they deserve.
Figuring out where accepted stories are in the editing process ~
if you have received a story with editorial suggestions, please give me a shout in this thread. Let me know if you had already re-subbed it or if those edits are still in progress and I?ll make sure that it is looked at as soon as you send it back.
Streamlining the confirmation process as well as the editing/ rewriting loop ~
this is going to take a lot of patience on everybody?s part but I am more than confident it can be done! I know how hard it is to send something out and end up worrying if it even got to the right place. I want to make sure that this endeavour is a positive experience for everyone involved and that means I need regular communication from all parties.
Whistling in the Darkzone seems to be fully operational so you are more than welcome to post replies over there as well, since this is basically cross posted from there =)
At this point I am not sure when issue 13 will be ready but with your input we can turn this around and make it a success. That success will of course lead to others as we establish a functional rhythm for this publication. Flashing Swords will, with a concerted effort between writers, artists and staff survive through this period of trials and tribulations. I am, as I've only been on the job a little over 48 hours, still gathering the team together and making sure we are all on the same page.
Sword and Sorcery publications of all types have a distinguished history and they can reach people on a level that full length novels sometimes can?t. They are good launching points for fresh talent and ideas. They allow authors to explore character concepts and plot arcs without the commitment of a full length novel. That is, in my opinion, part of what makes writing short fiction fun and a solid stepping stone to a full time literary career, if that is what is desired.
I sincerely hope that each of you will continue to place your trust in our efforts on your behalf.
Honourably yours,
Neve
