    Default RotB Update

    Apologies in advance.

    Long and short of things:

I and my family are moving. Over the next two days, as a matter of fact. Into a home that three weeks ago we didn't know if we had; two weeks ago we didn't know if we had; one week ago we didn't know if we had. All this after losing out on 2 previous homes. Due to some very lazy and unpro behavior of several other people, things have been pushed to the uttermost limits of sanity. Last-minute work had to be done on the home; last-minute inspections, certifications, appraisals, and lending approval. The last still isn't confirmed yet...and we're supposed to close at 3pm Thursday. I'm told we'll still get the house, perhaps on a 'post-occupancy rental' status until a real closing can happen, but nothing guarantees that. So that means we still don't know if we have a house less than a day before we're supposed to. Once we do move into it, I have rebuilding and repairing to do before I can even do the remodeling that I planned to do (as in fencing for the dogs, etc.). During all this we've had both cars break down, go into the shop, and every single person who was at one point or another planning on helping us move has had to cancel due to you-name-it-it's-happened reasons. So my wife and I will be the only ones loading a 26' u-haul with all our stuff. Yada-yada, I know.

I say all this to say that I've worked on the RotB layout almost none-stop during and around all the above. Something is drastically wrong with it, I've tried every way possible to work around it or in spite of it - all to no avail. In order to meet the printing requirements I have to rebuild the entire manuscript from the ground up. Okay, a day's worth of work. Maybe. Negative here is that from pretty much right now till Saturday night I don't have that time. I won't have internet access during some of it, nor even computer access. SO my day of work can't even start to Sunday night, after I return to my bill-paying job. Which means it will be June 1st before I can even remotely send the new file to the printer...get the new proof 3-5 days later...and then okay it for immediate release - if it passes inspection.

So, I profoundly apologize for this, but I have tried. On this schedule of events, the limited cover editions should start shipping by the middle of next week and the regular cover editions by next week's end. And that is being very optimistic and tying my fingers crossed.

I will not be posting this information on the RBE website. I only extend all this info here on the SFReader forum because of all my faithful fans and friends who frequent here. Again, I apologize wholeheartedly.

(I probably will not be responding to any posts here until next week.)

We've all been there, Jason. Real life trumps fantasy. Don't sweat it too badly.

    Take care.

Thank you one and all for your words of support. I now have internet access, 300+ emails demanding attention, an aching body, an almost-broken-down spirit (it's coming back, never fear; just had the (as Mike says) pssht kicked out of it), and more things breaking down at this 'new' house daily.

But, I have a functioning computer. So I will now be working on RotB's layout. Just letting y'all know.

Again, thanks for the encouragement. And yes, Ty, I wish you were closer too All those boxes of books would have felt so much better in your hands!

that's rough. congrats on making it into a new place.

if you don't have one, i recommend a vibrating heating pad - it runs a bit, closer to 25, but it's a godsend for every sore body part. it keeps me going when my old back problems flare up.

Update #2: 'New' house is only new to us; otherwise, it's falling apart everywhere else. Most everywhere else. Air conditioning and toilet and shower leaks; trees growing in the sewer line; crashing garage doors; inept repair technicians; overpriced hired hands; rinse and repeat. I'm plain worn out.

I am off of the bill-paying work the next two days. I plan to have the depressingly late RotB finally fixed and submitted. As my plans haven't been doing very well at coming to fruition, say it with me now: Please oh please please please, by Crom!

    - Oh yes, my last house wasa wreck. You'll learn to do lots of construction-type jobs on one of those 'fixer-uppers'. Most aren't hard to do, it's just that you're living in the darned thing while trying to do them.

    - Here's a hint. Don't tear up more than one room at a time or your spouse will be veeeery unhappy. Her unhappiness will multiply with each additional room you 'begin' to work on. Just pick one roomand rip into it/ expect everything to take longer and cost more than you plan/ expect to find more wrong as you get into the job/expect setbacks (termites, earthquakes, floods, that one crummy neighbor, etc)
    - It sounds depressing, and is sometimes, but that last wreck I reconstructed from end-to-end over 17 years completely paid for a move, abrand new house in a nice neighborhood, a new truck, and a couple of years saliery to get re-established. So, in the big picture, sweat equity pays off big.

    - Best of luck with your project.

Totally hear you and agree, Rob.

One prob: I did all that over 14 years at my last house. This house was only supposed to need two things, both actually optional: Expand the 1 car garage to 2, and put in floor-to-ceiling wrap-around-the-room shelves for my books.

At this point in time, after 2 weeks here and a new or newly compounded problem each and every day, neither of those options will be being exercised. Three weeks ago, I envisioned sitting in my new library/office and wrapping up RotB last week. Instead, I'm sitting on the living room floor with my laptop trying to research pricing and options for some major repairs.

    In short, if I'd bought a fixer-upper I wouldn't be crying.

um, thanks for the support Bill. I think. and 'ouch' is right, Rob.

OK. Plumbing seems to be fixed - fingers crossed. Air conditioning is a toss up right now, but it and other work is beginning to head the right direction. Internet and phone service, now that seems to fluctuate, but I have both sort of right now, they're coming again tomorrow to hopefully fix it for good. But since I've got it right now, I'm working on getting some info out there, sadly some rejections and happily some acceptances sent, and RotB to market.

    Keep your fingers crossed!

    GOOD NEWS, MY FRIENDS!

The limited cover editions of Rage of the Behemoth are green-lit! I've just come from approving them at the printers, and I will have all 500 copies in my possession by this time next week at the latest!

I am still waiting to hear back from the printer of the regular edition, but no news is good news, so it is said. Almost in the homestretch now - thanks for all the patience...from most of you

Well it don't seem like I've gone very far.

LSI kicked back the first file submitted Wednesday for a single font not embedded on page 5.
I recreated the entire file, Distilled it, and had it resubmitted by 2 that afternoon. That revised file went into Premedia at 8:05 Thursday morning. I got online at 9:30 PM Friday to discover an email at 4:47PM from LSI telling me that there was 'No new interior file to process'.

I don't even know what that really means, and now it's the weekend and no one will be looking at the file and my email reply until Monday. If I didn't need/want the distribution channels and other things LSI provides me, I'd just have the local printer print all the damn books! The local guy took the first file and printed a perfect book.

I'd go put this under 'Gripes!' too, but I'm tired and going to bed.

it means your upload didn't go through for some reason OR that there wasn't any noticible change to the file and someone assumed that it wasn't a new file.

Email your rep, explain the problem and work with them. Also, request that you not be charged for the reuploads.

    BTW:

If you didn't reload the original document, and then resave it, and THEN reload it and THEN recreate your pdf, the font that didn't embed the first time probably didn't embed the second time either.
