Rob,
I knew there would be. There always is. I tend to come up with my best story ideas for anthologies after the submissions are closed, which is why I hate themed anthologies. I am still peddling a couple of Giant Monster Stories I came up with after the original diakaiju anthology closed. I'll probably have lots of great ideas for RBE's latest after its closed. That is just the way it seems to go for me.
T.A.,
I don't actually have a bodice ripper pirates and plantation owner's daughter story on hand. But having joked about it, I'll probably come up with one sometime this year. When I do, I'll let you know.

LOL I'll be waiting for it.

I have the same problem with themed submissions. In fact the story I sent earlier was originally meant for the Demon anthology, but I didn't finish it in time.
Even Mother Nature is against me now. Last night when I sat down to finish the other story the power went out. I'm half way through edits now, but still need to write that battle scene. This really will be a last minute submission.

I also submitted something to this anthology. I'll not ask if it was received but instead hope that this post will register as a place saving mechanism if later we find that the story was lost in the shuffle. Best of luck to all involved!

Ususually, I get told I put too much action in a story.

Or, that it's too violent. ???

Some updates...

As I wade through the slush and find (sigh) roughly two out of three submissions lacking action of any kind, I realize I've had three acceptances that did not get their formal presentation to the public.

'Each Day its Debt' by Tom Williams. 6,800 words.
'The Daughter's Oath' by Brent Knowles. 5,400 words.
'Secrets of the Iron Skull Order' by Bill Ward. 4,000 words.

I promise you'll love all three.

Current table of contents: 8 stories, 46,000+ words. That's about half-way to my goal with maybe 130 submissions left in the stack.

And now for some fun news...

I don't know why I was expecting more very short fiction (as in 1,500 words or less), probably because I was inundated with it for Black Dragon, White Dragon and figured writers had drawers full of these stories. There may be a bunch of flash fiction waiting for me in the pile, but even after I specifically called for more I haven't seen it.

So, sharpen your pencils boys and girls! Submissions are still being accepted for stories of 1,500 words or less (and I might stretch that limit by a few hundred words if I had to). I don't see myself getting through the slush for at least two weeks. If you can dash something off or have it handy, feel free to send it my way. And yes I will hunt you down with Kane-like tenacity if you send me a story longer than 2,000 words. This reading period has an arbitrary deadline; send sooner rather than later.

Er, if one has already submitted a longer story for consideration, is it still acceptable to submit a short one as well?

Hey, that sounds like fun. I've got this 25,000 word novella I've been holding on to . . .

Mine clocked in at about 1000 words if, you know, you want to skip ahead in the slush to something that you know is short.

And congratulations to Mr. Williams, Mr. Knowles and Mr. Ward. TB&I already boasts a stellar ToC and I am certainly looking forward to this anthology.

Drat, this could bode poorly for my first story. I'm a woman, I need a little tease first. You can't just throw me into the action cold.
