Thread: Solomon Kane

    Default Solomon Kane

Granted, the trailer looks pretty cool, and it's been awhile since I read the Solomon Kane collection, but I don't remember the stories being quite so supernatural as presented in the trailer. Is my memory a bit off? I guess overall it's not that meaningful, just wondering if my memory is serving me correctly. I wish they wouldn't change the main character backstory, either. I don't recall Solomon taking a vow against violence, but again, it's been awhile since I read the collection.

Solomon Kane was a Robert E. Howard character, so he was pretty much all about violence. I suppose he might have agreed violence never solved anything, except for all those SOBs who needed killing. Solves them just dandy.

As someone once said, 'I'm not condoning violence. I'm just saying it works and I recommend you use it.'

Solomon Kane was a righteous instrument of God. In practice those people tend to be indistinguishable from delusional maniacs.

I'm currently reading the Solomon Kane stories. I don't interpret Kane as being considered an 'instrument of God.' His motives were based on his own personal code of morality inspired by his faith. In other words, he killed for his own reasons. He never did it in the name of God, Christianity, etc.

Most of the Kane stories contain supernatrual elements.

    Winged vampiric creatures in Africa.
Severed hands creeping across the nighted countryside to throttle the life out of people.
A murderous spirit abroad on the moors.
The famous poem about Sir Richard Grenville...who wakes Kane and battles at his side against a horde of savages...and Grenville died years before.
The staff Kane often carries has magical properties.
    Kane's buddy is N'longa. An African juju-man.

Rather more supernatrual Kane stories than not, I think.

I just finished reading a collection of Solomon Kane stories. Pretty neat, and yep, they did have dark fantasy/horror elements. I liked the way Howard pointed out that Kane mistook his excitement at the opportunity to get into a fight as religious fervor.

You're right, and I should have given it more thought.

I finally, after a very long wait, got round to seeing the Solomon Kane movie.

Granted, it isn't really Howard's creation and it takes quite a few liberties with the character but it is a whole load of fun - James Purefoy is great as SK, there are many, many buckles swashed and more dodgy English accents that you can shake a stick at (it's the kind of movie where someone will rather say 'zir' rather than 'sir'). Sure, the CGI is a little dodgy in places and some of the plot twists can be seen coming a mile away but in general it's a fun romp.

Now if only someone would make an El Borak movie!

The Kane movie never came out at the cinema here, we don't even have it on DVD.

I've seen the You Tube vids where the guy who made the movie said the first Kane movie was for Hollywood and the second one (?) would be for Kane fans.
But I don't think it made a great deal of money, so maybe a second one wont see the light of day.
