    Default Princess of Mars

    No, not the Disney production.

    www.theasylum.cc/product.php?id=163

I guess they must get good numbers or advertising because they keep churning these out these low budget wonders.

Coming soon to 'SyFy' and DVD.

One wonders if the Green Martians will remain two-armed or if they will CGI in the second set of arms.

Two-armed Green Martians are a bit like the old Gor movie using horses instead of tarns (giant hawks.)

    *shrug*

Why? I'm guessing the property fell into public domain? Or the estate managers dropped some really bad mescaline. Staring Traci Lords, and they still didn't costume them right? Excuse--

Alot of ERB's early work is public domain now. I did read on a blog entry that someone thought ERB Properties usually fight something like this, though, claiming that the expired copyright only applies to print editions and any adaptations must be cleared through ERB Properties (or, whatever their official name is.)

So, I don't know if they gave rights to clear this. Probably not, considering the big Disney production coming.

I guess Asylum were trying to hop on the Disney bandwagon but the wagon got delayed. This company also did War of the Worlds around the same time as the Tom Cruise movie, and somehow acquired rights to produce an 'I Am Legend' adaptation when the Will Smith movie came out. And now, with the Guy Richtie movie coming, they are also now doing their own Sherlock Holmes.

While I think Lords still has the body to pull this off, her face is starting to show her age and she's just a little too old to be Dejah Thoris. Plus, she should have red skin and be dark-haired!

On the other hand, I think Sabato really looks the part of John Carter, bed-sheet diaper aside. (In fact, for physical looks I think he's better than the current Disney choice - though I am still not clear if the Disney project is live-action or animation. Maybe they aren't clear, either.)

As for acting ability, I've not seen enough of either to judge personally.

I like the Green Martian tusks, though. They at least got that right.

(yeah, who am I kidding, it's still gonna suck)

I'll give them the tusks and they still come up two feet of height and two arms short.

Traci is a fine actress, she managed to pull off being an adult for four years as a kid. I like her on most things I've seen and yes, her face is going. Her music rocks, as well. The Martians look like a poor man's tuskin raider, or that they should be guarding Jabba the Hut.

Good lord, I didn't think anything could make me excited about the prospect of a Disney production.

Isn't thatDejah Thoris costume a total rip-off of Princess Leia's Jabba slave get-up?

Some movies just should not be made from novels.
A Princess of Mars is one of them.

Animated a'la heavy metal, maybe. Otherwise, I agree.

I'd say in this day and age of CGI, live action can be the equal of animation.

However, it needs to be _well done_ CGI and everything else needs to be up to paar, too.

Cheap CGI looks like cheap CGI, just as much as flimsy sets and bad acting show through, too.

What would be awesome is if some director who truly had a vision and a love for the original, a la Peter Jackson and LOTR, got ahold of the project. Odds are about 1 to 1,000 that'll happen...
