Ten-year-old, a boy, was crazy for Potter, but wants something 'that could really happen.' Sounds sci-fi to me. Ideas?

Have you tried Michelle Pavel's 'Wolf Brother' series? About this Indian boy on an initiation journey with his father - when they are unexpectedly attacked by a gigantic bear - who isn't all that he seems... And poor little Torak (12 years old) finds himself alone in the forest, traumatised and injured and fighting for survival...
And it's very well written...

Ooo - and there's also Diana Wynne Jones 'Crestamanci' series - quirky, clever fantasy action-packed with great characters. She should be as famous as J.K. Rowling...

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series is a blast. Some sneaky lessons in mythology in there too.
Ten, huh?
Katherine Jink's 'Evil genius' might work, its out in Pb, I'd look it over first.
Ten is a tricky age.

'Preciate the help. Now I've got to do some research on these. Thanks -- WB
Were itnot for that "something 'that could really happen'" caveat, I would have immediately said The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
Oh oh oh I've got it: Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Realistic YA novel that celebrates the power of imagination, friendship, first love, and bonding through shared fantasy. Also loss--the last time I read it I was thirty years old, and I still cried.Beautiful book.

I'd second 'Evil Genius' and its sequel, I think it's 'Genius Squad.' There's a third one on the way. In that genre (anti-heroes) there's anything by Eoin Colfer = Artemis Fowl.
Ranger's Apprentice sword and sorcery series, by John Flannigan, written for ten year olds and up.
Bestselling Aussie/International author.
Available on Amazon and many bookshops.
(I just read the first book. It was enjoyable enough that I read it in one sitting.)
