I totally agree. For all the faults I find with Smashwords, it's definitely a site that's worth using for promotions, if nothing else.

In a field full of controversy, differing claims, and outright scams, SmashWords shines as a sort of beacon: free to use, cheap to "power use", low commission, big store, miractulous placements (like on iPad and iPhone), non-asshole CEO (how many of THOSE are there in the high tech field?), fantastic tutorial and support, and one of the most comprehensive presentations of formats in the business.
There really isn't much resson to look elsewhere to do an eBook. Or a sample chapter, short, poetry broadside, etc.
BTW it's not hard to find programs to convert pdf to epub or other text formats.
