Thread: Question about I, Robot (book)

  1. Default Question about I, Robot (book)

We're looking at new novels to get. I'm trying to geek out our selection a bit. I, Robot is one option, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Before I order anything, I need to know if there's anything that might sink that as an option. Keep in mind this is North Texas, so any kind of language, naughty stuff, etc is pretty much a deal breaker.

    Hi,

It's many years since I read it, but I don't remember anything that would cause a maiden aunt to faint; and as it was first published in 1950, I think you should be safe.

There are lots of used copies for about $1 in alibris et al, so you could buy before you buy

We went ahead and ordered it. You're probably right, but just because it's 50 years old doesn't make it safe. Ever paid much attention to some of the stuff in Shakespeare? What about the Miller's Tale?

Ah, another one I've been meaning to read. Have to make a mental note for the next time I'm at the library...

Unusual enough for me, I've actually seen the movie even though I haven't read the book.

Jeff, any of the sci-fi books from Altered Dimensions would fit your requirements

The Miller's Tale was Chaucer and he was far naughtier than Shakespeare. I doubt you'll find anything risque in 1950s sf.

Oh, yes you will. Robert Sheckley's stuff immediately springs to mind.

Sheckley may have published in the 50s, but his headspace was always in the 60s. Sheckley is one of the authors who created the transition to interesting 60s stuff.

And I'm well aware of who wrote The Millers Tale. I teach this stuff. Just giving a couple of examples of things that are old but quite naughty (some more than others)

You'll be fine with I. Robot. Asimov was extremely clean in his early fiction. No love or sex, and no swearing.

But it isn't a novel, it's a collection of short stories.
