Thread: The zine is back

    Default The zine is back

Flashing Swords Magazine will open for subs on July 15th. Send your material to C. A. Keller at submissions@flashingswords.com

We intend to do an annual at this point, and then go back to quarterly at our first opportunity.

Neve is at the helm again. We're only paying a cent a word, but hopefully that will change in time.

We are not looking for cover art, but will be looking for black and white interior art.

Neve is also in charge of our fantasy novel line, so check with her for details of what she is looking for.

I just pay the bills and publish. I don't pick them.

Good to hear. I have something I'll send along, too.

BTW, you may want to update the site link on the FS forum description line, the one that reads "Quarterly E-zine for sword & sorcery, sword & planet, & swashbuckling fiction. FlashingSwords". The link to Flashing Swords is the old www.flashingswords.SFReader.com, which sadly no longer works.

EDIT: Oops, wrong thread. Oh well...
Published: The Crane Horror in the Lovecraft eZine, The Case of the Galloway Eidolon in the Lovecraft eZine and Yaggoth-Voor in Rage of the Behemoth

Coming: Panathenaic in Roar of the Crowd, Apocalypse in Through Blood & Iron and Dark Assassin in Assassins: A Clash of Steel Anthology.

I somehow missed this announcement. Fingers crossed for a successful return: there'll be something on the way to you very shortly...

Excellent. Neve is in the process of moving from Dundee to Glasgow, but she will start reading for it as soon as she is settled.

    Hello everyone!

I am more than pleased to announce that the rumours ARE true, Flashing Swords Magazine is gearing up to return to publishing quality Fantasy fiction. While Jan and I had originally intended to open submission on the 15th of July I ended up travelling to a couple other cities during the end of June and early July, packing my flat and moving to the Glasgow area on Monday, the 19th of July. This of course means I'll be without reliable Internet for at least 2 weeks, possibly longer while we get settled/ our services switched over. Moving is such a pain in the, well, everywhere really and services take FOREVER to be established because the British excel at creating complicated bureaucratic processes. In the mean time I?m battling with a borrowed hot-spot account just to check my personal e-mails and get these forum/ blog postings up to keep you wonderful people in the loop!

Due to the rather sudden (like signing the lease the preceding Friday sudden) nature of my relocation and the delay (grrr at you BT, grrr I say!) on a secure connection to the Internet, Jan and I have decided to push back the official re-launch of FSM to the first of September. I am using my time off-line to fine tune both the fiction and art submission guidelines and to reaffirm exactly what I want Flashing Swords Magazine to deliver not only to its audience but to its contributors as I have very strong feelings about acting in a professional as well as ethical manner. I want contracts that are fair and favourable to our Authors and Artists. I want the publication process; receipt notices, acceptance/ rejections, queries and editing to have a decent turnaround time while layout and printing have committed deadlines. Above all, I want each contributor to feel that whether their submission makes it into print or not, working with Flashing Swords was not only positive but that they?d want to do it again and again.

So to recap quickly: Flashing Swords Magazine is once again on the rise. Submissions officially open on the 1st of September. We will be accepting: Sword and Sorcery, Sword and Planet, Heroic Fantasy, Epic/ High Fantasy, Swashbuckling Adventures and Historical Adventures as usual. We are paying a penny per word up to 6,000, which means that the maximum pay out for a fiction submission is capped at 60 USD. Art submissions are a wee bit more complicated as I?m planning on using both submitted and commissioned pieces which will have differing pay rates. I?ll have a firmer grasp on that and will make a specific post with further details soon. On a parting note, it is totally okay if you have already sent a submission in as there was no way to predict this unavoidable disruption or its duration. I?ll be reading them as soon as I can actually get to them on a secure connection.

    Your roving feral editor,

    C. A. Keller (Neve)

Um, I submitted a week or so ago, before this announcement. Should I resubmit when 1st September comes around, or what?

If the hotspot stays put long enough, I should be reading everything that's currently sitting in the inbox on Sunday. My security fears have been put to rest and getting a proper internet service has become an exercise in patience. Mmmm slush, coffee and sticky buns

No need to feel like that, it WAS tucked in at the end of my slightly weird banter

I sent an email retracting my submission because I had not received any response to an email sent regarding the status of the magazine.
I am delighted to hear that Flashing Swords is going to continue being published! This is a genre I grew up reading, and no matter where my literary tastes have taken me in life, sword and sorcery will still be one of my favourite styles.
Now that FSM is back and running, how can I retract my retraction? I think that my short story would fit best with your publication.
    Thanks!
