Default Publishers becoming a wasteful by-product in Ebook circles?

Check out the article from Brandon's website below...while he's obviously still in favour of actual printed books he also makes a good argument for why writers don't need a publisher when it comes to ebooks.

I think serious readers will still purchase printed books. They will also purchase e-books. My wife does both, as does other friends of mine that are avid readers. The POD concept for printers is interesting; some already use it for low volume books. The Expresso machine can print and bind books from electronic files in minutes; I recently read an article where a library that owns such a machine actually orders the digital file from the publisher and prints the book on site. Times are indeed changing.

Seriously, what can an indie publisher do that you can't do yourself? If you can write a query letter, you can certainly write a press release and marketing materials. Small/indie publishers are not all that necessary for ebooks and POD.
