Thread: Movies 2011

    Default Movies 2011

Have you all seen the summer line-up? Where are all the new discussion threads?

Went to Thor last night. I'd heard some people comparing it to the first Iron Man. I don't think I'd rate it quite that high, but it was good. The actor who plays Thor seemed like a perfect fit.
The visual effects were good, despite the fact we went with the 2D version. The only gripe with that would be the blurry closeup battle scenes that were made specifically for 3D.

The one thing I was disappointed in was the portrayal of Loki. Granted, he's one of my favorite mythological characters, and I expect him to act a certain way, so I'm likely biased. There was a tease in the beginning with the first glimpse of his power, and when I realized who he was, that had my hopes up. Then they totally underplayed him. When he was being played, he was sulking, jealous, inconsistent, and lacking in self confidence. They made a decent underhanded backstabber, but he certainly didn't come close to the smirking trickster I expected to see.

The previews before the movie had all sorts of goodies to look forward to this year.

Cowboys and Aliens - Apparently got pushed back again. No release date was given.

Green Lantern- A decent trailer. I'll put it on the list.

Captain America- Yeah, we'll probably go see that one.

X-Men: First Class - High on the list. Crossing fingers they can make up for the atrocity that was X3.

Conan- How can this one not be plastered all over the discussion forum? The scenery looks great, but I'm not holding my breath just yet.

I'll have to find a more complete list. That's all I can remember off the top of my head.

    See you at the movies.

I've been so disappointed with the movies in the last couple of months that I've just stopped watching any...even though we're getting them for a $2 rental fee at our local vid shop.

The new crop of Marvel movies hold no interest for me. Having grown up reading most of their titles I have to say that half of their movies just didn't capture the true spirit of the comics. However Spider-man and the Fantastic Four films were awesome, mainly thanks to the actors portraying the characters. Hugh Jackson is superb as the Wolverine.

    Green Lantern looks okay.

I want to see Faster and also Fast Five..and when I can pick them up for 2 bucks I will. (I hate the cinema, rather watch movies in the comfort of my home.)

Just watched the Conan trailer. Why is he always shirtless? REH's Conan was normally clothed. Gotta say the movie trailer looked more a Clash of Titans type of movie than a Conan story.
The fancy acrobatics, the double sword twirling. It's all so not REH's Conan.

I think sword and sorcery is best read, not filmed.

Did you per chance see Season of the Witch?

Despite the fact Cage was totally wrong for the part, and the stilted forced humor dialogue fell flat on its face, there were some things they did right with that movie. I was particularly impressed with the final part, once they got to the monastery. I liked it so much I could almost forgive the clumsy first 3/4 of the movie. Unlike Solomon Kane, which I liked, but the ending felt a little "wham, bam, no cookie for you".

I think if they could take what they did right with Solomon Kane, and combine it with what they did right with Season of the Witch, they'd have one kick-ass S&S movie.

I enjoyed Thor - it did have a sort of Iron man tonge-in-cheek sort of feel. My kids liked it.

The new Conan is giving me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. From the trailers, it looks pretty far removed from the REH Conan. I hope I'm wrong!

Green Lantern looks good. Early buzz is that it, too, is going for the Iron Man feel.

There's also some X Man preview flick coming out, don't know much about that.

I still like the experience of going to the theater....

Some movies just beg to be seen on the big screen.

I went hunting down some more that sound like they have potential. Haven't seen all the trailers yet.

13 Assassins - Despite the use of the word "bloodbath" in most of the reviews, I'll probably try to get my hands on this one. If I'm lucky the movie rental store will have it in their pathetically tiny foreign films section.

POTC: On Stranger Tides - Yes, I want to see it, but hubby doesn't want to. I may have to use some leverage to get to the theater for this one.

Priest - It has potential, but I'm not a big horror fan.

Smurfs - Not even if hell froze over.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Not a fan, but I'll reserve judgment until I see some trailers.

Puss in Boots - Most likely catch it on dvd.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Meh. We'll see.

Immortals - From the scant information, it sounds a lot like Clash of the Titans. To be decided.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Probably. Have to wait and see what the trailers are like.

I wasn't planning on seeing Thor until folks whose opinions I respect told me it was good. The only move on my radar right now is Cowboys and Aliens, and that's it. I'm a rental fan these days.

I seriously need to catch up on my movie watching.

Green Lantern- It had potential, but ended up pretty lame. My kids made fun of it all the way home. Heck, it's been months, and they still use it as punchlines for jokes.

    X-Men: 1st Class - Good

    Thor- Good

    Captain America- Good

Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Please pass the rotten fruit. I've run out of things to throw.

Conan - Meh. At least it didn't make me want to throw things at the screen. Soloman Kane was better.
