Hi Jim
I'm a great fan of A B Chandler's Rim World stories myself and I think it's great that you've decided to attempt to write your own stories in the same universe that Chandler created.
However...
Both my wife and I have read your prologue and first chapter and feel that you are in desperate need of a good editor.
The spelling is fine but the sentence structure needs a lot of work.
(Pirates does not have a capital P by the way, unless it is the first word in a sentence.)
As I have suggested to others in the past I believe you should join a writer's forum.
Writer's forum's are often able to supply critique readers who will offer suggestions and guidance.
Or you could do what my wife did on my behalf.
She partook of a paid editor's course just so that she could better help me edit my own stories.
This has been invaluable to me and I'm forever grateful she did so.
She has started to do some professional editing for aspiring authors as a paid for service.
Feel free to PM me if you'd be like more info about that.
Be aware that if you're not planning to publish your stories or novel for money then you would be better off gaining more knowledge via various free internet editing sites.
I'd only spend money on a professional editor if I was planning to publish my books for a fee.

hello Jaq...
thanks for the feedback! muchly appreciated!
re: Pirates....sorry, programmer here and the caps on the first letter of a variable always indicated a visual exclamation....dont think that'd ever change :-(
re: pro editing....not now...but I will look at some of the online courses...thanks for that! and the note that I need same too....
lastly, free is where it's at for me right now....tho I'd love to eventually make beer money from same!

Hi Jim,
Congrats on getting a novel finished! I read through the prologue and I recommend Ken Rand's 10% solution generously applied. One of the pronouncements that stuck with me from one of hte workshops I attened (many years ago) is: description is a lot more fun to write than it is to read.
Good luck!
