To focus on the obscenity is missing the point entirely, I think. Burroughs himself said he was disturbed by writing it but he felt it had to come out, and it's good that he did. Naked Lunch is more than just a novel about drug addiction, it's a dystopian vision of society, albeit through a very strange and unique stream of conciousness, a society where people are subjugated, used for outrageous experiments, and treated as cattle by their leaders. Remember that this novel was written in 1959 and it's even more eerily accurate now than it was then.

More than anything, I think Naked Lunch is an essential read for everyone, it's visceral and entertaining and very deep. Anyone who can deny the truth that it preaches is literally closing themselves off to what is really going on out there on the streets. Read it with an open mind and you will be amazed at the insight.

i am one to agree with the book. it is a very scary and sick book. but that's because it's so true. i also enjoy the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky and that is the same way. you can't hate a book becuase its about real things in the real world. its not fancy or fake, it's the truth. and if you don't like reading books like that then you're obviously a coward to life. go read the book. unless you're afraid of the truth and can't face the fact that the world is made up of things like this, and we all come in counter with them atleast once in a while. think about it, apply to real life, and let it soak in, and i garuntee you'll enjoy it.

This book is just amazing. Okay, it has some disgusting passages, but what is the aim of all literature? To give the reader an insight of Reality (with a capital letter). And if reality is disgusting, violent and pornographic, the work of art should be then disgusting, violent and pornographic. "Naked Lunch" is disturbing, not as much for its scenes of sodomy, but rather for its incredible sense of truth; and it is exceedingly well written. Buy this book right now!
