Thread: KEW-Kane material

1. #1

Default KEW-Kane material

Dunno if anyone of you have every real Karl Edward Wagner's Kane books. I jsut re-read BLOODSTONE (after 20 years) and it is a dang good read. A pal just sent me the limited edition hardback MIDNIGHT SUN from NIGHTSHADE books of the collected Kane short tales. Anyone who has never read UNDERTOW or RAVEN'S EYRIE or MISERACORDE dunno what ya are missing...[8D]

I need to second Shrews opinions of Wagner's Kane series. While the whole of S&S is littered with copies of barbarians, warriors and the odd theif, Wagner created a unique character.
Anyone interested in reading an overveiw should check out;

Also, the SFBC currently has both volumes for sale.

Excellent. Kane is not yer mother's barbarian. Anti-hero big time...disturbing at times, always very good.

Kane kicks ass!

I third the recommendation.

I was lucky enough to get two letters from Karl Edward Wagner. You can read them at
http://kingsofthenight0.tripod.com He was a very generous man. He wrote one of them while he had the flu.

Very neat.

And - what-the-hell?? Queen of the Night ?? Damn. Did that ever actually see light-of-day? Was there a British edition, as he said? (I see the date on this letter was the year he died) I love Legion from the Shadows! I'd be extremely interested in finding Queen... if it exists ....

Thanks!

I was never as impressed with Kane as I was with Kull or Conan. He was probably too much of an ANTI-hero for me. I really did enjoy the short story in 'Death Angel's Shadow' about him being caught in a snowed-in castle with a were-wolf though. That was one story that I thought that KEW was dead-on-the-mark with. From the white death of winter pressing in, to the final battle, the whole story oozed action, intregue, magic, and blood. I give that one highest marks all around. Better than the political machinations of the larger books (I never did care who ruled whatever country.)

Well, that was the thing...Kane wasn't a typical hero. A few times, ya almost wished he'd get his. But the tales and books are good stuff.

DARKNESS WEAVES is a fine book, too.

Kane is a character I'd love to write, since most of my characters aren't that pleasant either. (that's not on purpose, just kinda happens)

Any of you read At First Just Ghostly yet,I believe it is the last Kane story that KEW wrote and is set in the present. Another interesting story was The Gothic Touch,KEW throws Kane and Moorcock's Elric together for one tense little piece.

I read Bloodstone and Darkness Weaves last summer, getting ready to read all the short stories in Midnight Suns after I finish up Book II of the Fafhrd/Mouser series. Kane is one of my faves, to be sure. I have yet to be disappointed. I've read a couple of his short stories already, Misiericorde and the one with the poet that (spoiler) kills everyone at the end.

I found one other little tidbit -- the novel was for Zebra Books, and they went bankrupt just about the time the book was due.

I wonder if it's in a pile somewhere. I wonder if KEW had another copy.

And, if so, I wonder who has it now.

Anyone here have any idea who has the rights to his work or who might know? Don't know if it would even do any good but if it exists I would really like to read it and I am sure a lot of you guys would as well.

According to the bibliography in Exorcisms and Ecstacies, Queen of the Night was originally schedule to appear from Zebra Books in 1978 and Ace Books in 1980, but it is listed as unpublished. Karl's letter was in 1994, and E&E came out in 1997. The rights should be held by his estate.

Just wanted to chime in.

Kane Yeah!

I read Conan and was blown away. I then read for years this and that and enjoyed it much.

Then I read Kane and if it was possible was even more blown away.

Seems like his estate would want to push that novel. Only Kane knowledge is in a bitofa lullthese days he still holds enough name recognition to warrent a knew book.

Maybe it was simply too rough a 1st draft?

I'm not sure who administers KEW's estate, but I know who knows. David Drake, a good friend indeed to KEW, almost certainly could put anyone wanting to in touch with the estate managers (if he is not in fact one of them).

Good idea. Are you asking him? If not, I will, but best to avoid several people asking him separately, I think.

You do it. I seem to recall asking him about it a couple of years ago, but I forgot the answer!

Karl intended to set Queen in Atlantis and kept for years a
book he'd borrowed from me, the Problem of the Picts. He told Zebra
he was working on it and that it would be done momentarily. They
printed the cover for it (I have a flat, from Karl's effects).

Karl was lying. He never did any real work on Queen and
returned my book as soon as he got the Conan deal. He was, however,
quite angry that Dick Tierney and... I want to say Dave Schultz, but
I don't swear to that after 30 years; in any case, the continuators
of the series, set their next novel on Atlantis. Karl claimed they'd
stolen the idea from him. That didn't appear the case to me, but I
don't know; maybe Karl was right.

Karl's estate is controlled by his siblings through the
Pimlico agency. They have turned down previous requests to write in
Karl's worlds.

All best,
Dave Drake
Sorry, folks.

Thanks Jeff.
That was the answer I got years ago, I now recall. KEW played his publishers fast and loose on a lot of things, which must have frustrated them in the extreme. He has so much talent!
